Aboriginal clans of the island

Aboriginal clans occupied different sections of the island. Some sand blows are named for them. Badjala Sand Blow is named for the clan that occupied the central section, Dulingbara Sand Blow for the clan that occupied the southern section and part of the Cooloola Coast, and Ngulungbara Sand Blow for a clan that occupied the northern section.

Several dunes take their names from objects found there. Anvilstone Sand Blow is named for specimens of stones used in the preparation of Aboriginal food. Quartztool Sand Blow is named for Aboriginal tools made from quartz pebbles, and Stonetool Sand Blow for specimens from the most complete undisturbed Aboriginal campsite found there. Knifeblade Sand Blow is named for small Aboriginal tools found there. Many other dune names come from the Badtjala and Butchulla languages, among them Di'bing, meaning mosquito.

The name K'gari

The locality of K'gari covers most of the land on the island of the same name, within the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland. Two localities make up the island: K'gari, which covers most of the land, and Eurong, on the east coast. The locality takes in most but not all of the island's land.

The name K'gari means 'Paradise' in Batjala. Many dune names on the island use words from the Badtjala and Butchulla languages, and many creek and lake names use words from the Kabi language. The island was previously known as Fraser Island. On 7 June 2023 the island and the locality both took the name K'gari.

Cook, Flinders and the Maheno

On 20 May 1770, Lieutenant James Cook of HM Bark Endeavour named Indian Head, describing it as a place on which "a number of Natives were assembled". Indian Head is also called Tukkee in the Badtjala language, a name meaning stone or stone knife. Cook named Sandy Cape on 20 May 1770 as well, for its physical appearance; the cape is also known as Woakoh.

Flinders Sand Blow is named for the place Matthew Flinders landed in 1802. The name of Maheno Beach comes from the wreck of the SS Maheno, and the beach runs between Eli Creek and The Pinnacles. Hook Point is also known as Torerr in the Badtjala language, and Waddy Point is also known as Minker.

Schools and the settled places

The island's schools opened and closed. Sandy Cape Provisional School ran from about 1874 until about 1915. In 1920 Wungoolba State School opened, and it closed circa 1921. North White Cliffs State School began in 1921. It closed in 1925. Fraser Island's provisional school opened on 13 July 1937. It closed in 1941.

Almost all of the locality is within the Great Sandy National Park. Development is confined to isolated pockets: Orchid Beach and Maheno Beach, Happy Valley and Dilli Village, and Kingfisher Bay Resort, along with the area near Moon Point. Happy Valley, north of Eurong on the east coast, is the locality's only town. Lake McKenzie is also known as Boorangoora.
